The club was founded in 1962 and was one of the first clubs to use the newly opened
Stevenage swimming pool. We have been holding our meetings there ever since and the
club has grown steadily from its original six members to an average of seventy.
In its early days the club was an independent body of amateurs but in 1988 it became
affiliated to the Sub Aqua Association (SAA) one of the major official diving organisation
which is affiliated to CMAS. The club aims to fully embrace the training standards
of the SAA and promote safe and enjoyable SCUBA diving through the experience and
enthusiasm of its members.
So that the club can safely and efficiently achieve its objectives it is administrated
an elected committee, which meets once a month and conducts the Annual General Meeting
to which all the members are invited.
The club is self-supporting and most of its finances are raised from the members
through the SSAC fees, which pay for insurance, pool hire, training and maintenance
of the clubs boat, two breathing air compressors and other equipment.
The swimming centre provides all the standard facilities that would be expected in
a large town pool. The club provides both the theory and practical training necessary
for scuba diving qualifications.
Theory lectures are run 8pm to 9pm in a meeting
room at the centre and two lectures can be run in parallel . From 9pm until 10.30pm
the pool is available so members can hone their skills or just enjoy swimming in
a segregated pool area. The scuba area includes 1.5m sections for shallow training
and a 3m diving area for underwater skills.
Each weekend, the club dives in open water, usually at the local Blue Lagoon, a private
lake to which the club has weekend access rights.
